Checkweigher accuracy: specify and test real line performance

Display resolution is not the same as dynamic accuracy. Useful performance depends on the product, conveyor, environment, speed and the method used to prove repeatability.

Short answer

What determines checkweigher accuracy?

Dynamic accuracy is determined by the complete measurement process: product stability, time on the weigh conveyor, belt and transfer behaviour, vibration, air movement, load-cell selection, filtering and line speed. The only useful claim is one tied to a defined product and operating condition.

Project decisions

What the final scope needs to define

01

Available weighing time

The product must enter, settle, be measured and leave the weigh belt before the next pack interferes.

02

Pack stability

Liquids slosh, pouches flex, tall bottles oscillate and loose contents move, changing the load-cell signal.

03

Belt transfers

Step changes, gaps, belt tension and grip can excite or tip the pack immediately before measurement.

04

External disturbance

Nearby machinery, floor vibration, conveyor contact and air movement can introduce measurement noise.

05

Filtering and recipes

Product-specific filtering can improve classification but must remain responsive at the required speed.

06

Reference method

A controlled sample set and agreed statistical method separate machine repeatability from pack variation.

Specification language

Resolution, repeatability and accuracy are not interchangeable

  • Scale interval: the smallest displayed increment; it does not prove the uncertainty of a moving pack result.
  • Repeatability: how closely repeated measurements agree under defined conditions.
  • Dynamic performance: classification achieved with the actual product moving at the stated rate.
  • Reject limit: the decision boundary, allowing for process variation and measurement uncertainty.
  • Capability trial: practical testing with representative good packs and known differences.
Application-led engineering

Test the real product before relying on a tolerance.

Representative samples and a line video help establish a realistic measurement window before final specification.

Common questions

Dynamic checkweigher FAQs

Is display increment the accuracy?

No. Displayed increment is resolution. Dynamic performance must be demonstrated with the real product at the required speed.

Why does speed affect accuracy?

Higher speed reduces measurement time and can increase pack movement. Throughput, spacing and settling time must be balanced.

Can accuracy be quoted before testing?

An indicative range may be possible, but a dependable commitment should use representative samples and a defined acceptance test.
